The initial preview for “Flamin’ Hot” has been released by Hulu. Directed by Eva Longoria, the movie depicts the story of Richard Montañez, a Mexican immigrant and ex-Frito-Lay custodian, who asserts that he created Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. The film, featuring Jesse Garcia as Montañez, along with Annie Gonzales, Dennis Haysbert, Tony Shalhoub, Matt Walsh, and Emilio Rivera, will be available for streaming on June 9.
According to Montañez, he came up with the idea to add chile powder to Cheetos while working as a custodian at the Frito-Lay plant in Rancho Cucamonga. He approached the company’s executives to propose the new snack and was able to outmaneuver those who tried to undermine his idea, resulting in his rise to success as an author and entrepreneur.
Frito-Lay has challenged the authenticity of Montañez’s account, as per a May 2021 report in the Los Angeles Times, where it was stated that workers based in the Upper Midwest were the ones responsible for developing Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Frito-Lay acknowledged Richard’s contributions to their company, particularly his understanding of Hispanic consumers, but they did not attribute the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or any Flamin’ Hot products to him. The movie is directed by Longoria, known for her roles in “Desperate Housewives” and “The Young and the Restless,” as well as her directing work on shows like “Black-ish” and “Jane the Virgin.” Franklin produced the film, with experience in faith-based movies like “Miracles From Heaven” and “Breakthrough,” and Colick wrote films like “Charlie St. Cloud” and “Ladder 49.”
Colick, in defense of Montañez, affirmed that the essence and authenticity of the story are undeniable. According to Colick, Montañez is the ideal representative of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
