Assembly Line Entertainment, a production-finance company, has recently introduced Assembly Line Comics, which has published its first graphic novel, Mondo Hollywoodland. The novel has been adapted and illustrated by Matt Strackbein, who will be serving as Chief Illustrator for Assembly Line Comics. Mondo Hollywoodland is based on Assembly Line Entertainment’s psychedelic-comedy film of the same name, which was produced by James Cromwell, an Academy Award nominee, and directed by Janek Ambros. The graphic novel has been co-written by co-authors of the film, Chris Blim and Marcus Hart. Following its exclusive launch on The Majority Report with Sam Seder, the graphic novel is now available online and in some comic bookstores, including Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.
Since its establishment in 2012 by Ambros, Assembly Line Entertainment has produced more than twelve full-length films, which have premiered at prestigious festivals like Venice, Sundance, and TIFF. Among their forthcoming releases are “Monica,” a Golden Lion nominee at Venice, “Magoada,” and “Ukrainians in Exile,” a documentary about refugees that they co-produced with Janusz Kaminski, a two-time Academy Award winner and Steven Spielberg’s long-time collaborator.
Assembly Line Comics plans to publish two to three graphic novels annually, with a focus on their existing intellectual property catalogue and new stories in both traditional and non-traditional genres. Upcoming titles include “Clear Creek,” a post-apocalyptic action/adventure, “Diego,” a noir that follows an obsessive photographer who manipulates a gang war to advance his art, and “California Blackjack,” a character study about a failed showbiz manager struggling with a gambling addiction.
We are thrilled to integrate film and graphic novels with a focus on independent cinema. Mondo Hollywood, created on a limited budget and already released as a film, serves as an exciting starting point. Working with the talented Matt Strackbein on future graphic novels is a prospect that excites us. Matt shared, “Transforming Mondo Hollywoodland into a comic was a thrilling experience, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Joining forces with Assembly Line Entertainment Comics is an opportunity I couldn’t resist.”
