There are some individuals who lament the absence of the Los Angeles Film Festival, arguing that the city no longer boasts a premier film festival. However, we disagree. Los Angeles is home to a multitude of high-quality film festivals, from AFI to Dances with Films, Method Fest to the recently concluded TCM Classics Festival. As the movie capital of the world, it’s only fitting that many of these festivals have been in operation for decades, often taking place at the TCL Chinese Theatres on Hollywood Boulevard. In fact, film enthusiasts can find new and classic works being showcased all across the city on any given week.
So, what’s on the horizon? The Beverly Hills Film Festival is celebrating its 23rd year, and it will be its first in-person festival since the pandemic, following virtual editions from 2020 through 2022.
Nino Simone, the festival’s founder, president, and philanthropist, is brimming with excitement for the upcoming event, which will open on April 19th. He states, “We are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to gather in person once again. The pandemic has forced recent iterations of the festival to be virtual, but this year, the BHFF is returning to the red carpet. We’re thrilled to revert to the original format and create an immersive experience that fully embodies the festival’s spirit. We look forward to reuniting festival-goers and filmmakers in the heart of the entertainment industry to celebrate the art of film together.”
Simone claims to have watched an immense number of movies in order to narrow down the selections to 150 features and shorts, which will be shown at the TCL Chinese in Hollywood from April 19-22. Additionally, the festival has received 150 screenplays competing for the top three spots in the Screenwriting Awards. Simone admits to having watched a staggering number of films over the past 22 years, estimating it to be over 15,000 films. Although the number of screenings varies each year, Simone has watched a record of 20 films in a row. The festival expects to attract an audience in excess of 40,000 for its screenings and will host post-screening receptions every night, as well as a grand Awards ceremony on April 23.
