The initial trailer for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” has been unveiled by Focus Features, providing a glimpse into the latest Portokalos celebration.
Nia Vardalos, the star, returns as the screenwriter and, for the first time, takes on the role of the director for the third film. Vardalos will be joined by her former and returning co-stars, including John Corbett, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Maria Vacratsis, Andrea Martin, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone, and Lainie Kazan. Elias Kacavas and Melina Kotselou are among the new faces added to the cast. The third film will pay tribute to Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s father Gus and passed away in 2021.
In 2002, the first installment of “Big Fat Greek Wedding” was released and went on to become the most successful romantic comedy ever made, raking in an impressive $368 million globally during its nearly year-long run in theaters. This remarkable achievement was followed by Nia Vardalos receiving an Oscar nod for her outstanding work on the original screenplay.
Vardalos’ one-woman play served as the basis for the first movie, which she starred in and turned into a classic romantic comedy. The story revolves around Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos (played by Vardalos), a young Greek-American woman who falls in love with a non-Greek man named Ian Miller (played by John Corbett). Despite her family’s strong objections, Toula decides to marry Ian. The couple’s journey to plan their wedding is filled with entertaining moments as they try to win over Toula’s family.
Over a decade later, in 2016, Vardalos released a sequel titled “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”. The story follows Toula as she discovers that her parents, Gus (played by Constantine) and Maria (played by Kazan), were never officially married, as the priest forgot to sign their marriage certificate 50 years ago. This leads to the Portokalos family planning another wedding, this time in Greece, with the help of Toula and Ian’s teenage daughter, Paris (played by Kampouris).
Produced by Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Gary Goetzman, the third installment of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” will also feature the return of executive producers Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, and Steven Shareshian. Mark your calendars for the theatrical release on September 8, 2023, and catch a glimpse of what’s to come in the full trailer below.
